Why does Edward Cullen go to the vulturi?
Harry Clearwater dies - so Bella feels the need to get some emotion out of her. She had a sudden urge and jumps off the cliff. Alice sees her doing this in her visions and rushes to see if Bella is ok. Jacob is with Bella. And Alice gets there and tells Rosalie where she has gone. Roaslie tells Edward that Bella is dead. So Edward rings up and pretends to be Carlisle and ask for Charlie, but Charlie is arranging Harry Clearwater’s funeral and Jacob tells Edward "He’s sorting out a funeral."
Edward thinks that its Bella’s funeral that he’s arranging and goes to get the Volturi to kill him.

Edward goes to the volturi because he believes Bella has committed suicide. He doesn’t want to live in a world where she doesn’t exist so he goes to provoke the volturi so he can also die.

To kill himself because he believes Bella has killed herself. Like Romeo and Juliet. In the beginning of the book it foreshadows this by talking about Romeo and Juliet.

He wants to die, because he believes a world without Bella isn’t worth living in. So he goes to the Vulturi because they are the only ones who can kill him. So he intended to turn them against him, so they would get angry and kill him. (Which they can do because they are strong, and are technically the vampire government.)
